Dental Bridges vs Dental Implants: Which Is Right for You?

Losing a tooth – whether through decay, injury, or gum disease – can feel daunting, but modern dentistry offers excellent options for restoring both function and appearance. Two of the most commonly recommended solutions are dental bridges and dental implants. At Bay House Dental in Cardiff, we guide patients through both options so they can make an informed choice that suits their circumstances, budget, and long-term goals.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that literally bridges the gap left by a missing tooth. It consists of an artificial tooth (called a pontic) held in place by crowns fitted over the natural teeth on either side of the gap. These anchor teeth are known as abutment teeth. The bridge is typically made from porcelain, sometimes fused to metal for added strength, and is permanently cemented in place.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone over a period of months in a process called osseointegration. Once the implant has fully integrated, an abutment and porcelain crown are attached on top, creating a restoration that looks, feels, and functions almost exactly like a natural tooth. Implants do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support.

How Do They Compare on Longevity?

Dental implants are generally considered the longer-lasting option. With proper care, a well-placed implant can last many decades — sometimes a lifetime. A dental bridge, while durable, typically needs replacing after ten to fifteen years. It is also worth noting that bridges involve preparing the adjacent teeth by removing some enamel, which means those teeth are permanently altered even if you later choose a different restoration.

What About Cost and Treatment Time?

Bridges are usually less expensive upfront and can be fitted in as little as two to three appointments, making them a quicker solution. Implants involve a surgical procedure and a healing period of several months before the final crown is placed, and the overall cost is higher. However, because implants last longer and do not affect neighbouring teeth, many patients find them more cost-effective over the course of a lifetime.

Are There Any Health Considerations?

One important advantage of implants is that they help preserve jawbone density. When a tooth is lost, the underlying bone gradually resorbs because there is no longer a root to stimulate it. An implant replicates the function of a root and maintains bone volume. A bridge sits on top of the gum and does not provide this stimulation. If bone loss in the area is already significant, additional procedures may be needed before an implant can be placed, and in some cases a bridge may be the more practical option.

Which Option Should You Choose?

The right choice depends on your individual clinical situation, general health, bone levels, and personal priorities. At Bay House Dental, we take time during your consultation to assess all these factors and discuss the options honestly with you.
